to this associated website that introduces, and expands upon, Great British Comics—an illustrated book on comics and culture by Paul Gravett & Peter Stanbury.

The site is devoted to the reading, understanding and enjoyment of British Comics, celebrating more than
a century of ripping yarns and wizard wheezes.

Come with us and look into every spidery corner and dusty attic of British Comics, as we attempt to reveal their relevance to British culture and how we have entertained ourselves through every decade.

For too long British Comics have been overlooked
as part of our cultural heritage, relegated to nostalgic reminiscence of bygone childhood days but comics
never were the exclusive realm of childhood.

We will transport you through more than one
hundred years of Britain’s bizarre weekly comics, newspaper strips, magazines and graphic novels from their secret origins to today’s cutting edge.

Explore the fascinating lives of the men and women who at a pen-stroke devised the comics we adore, yet sometimes remain unnamed and unrecognised until now.

There are also intriguing questions to ask about
the roles of comics in social history: for instance, the reluctance to acknowledge the influence of Victorian comics on early silent films, or the curious modern preference for any form of comics, be they American superheroes or Japanese manga for example, and the suspicion of our own British comics culture.
Why should these things be?

You can also WRITE TO THE EDITOR , Uncle Neddy, about any question you may have on the subject of comics and he will raise the dust in the archives while he wracks his brain to answer them if he can.

Great British Comics is so much more than a book, it reflects a culture, and over the next weeks and months this website will show the comics of Britain to be
bursting with fun, thrills and mischief. As read and evergreen today as they ever were. Welcome to the wonderful worlds of Great British Comics
